Planning to visit Kyoto in spring 2024? You shouldn’t miss the cherry blossoms! From forecasts and dates to the best sakura spots, here’s everything you need to know about cherry blossoms in Kyoto:
What month is the cherry blossom season in Kyoto?
The cherry blossom season in Kyoto varies from year to year but typically falls around the third week of March. Based on the first official cherry blossom forecast of Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC), cherry blossoms in Kyoto are expected to start flowering on March 29 and fully bloom on April 3.
How long does cherry blossom season last in Kyoto?
Most cherry blossoms you can see in Kyoto are Yoshino cherry trees, which can last for 10 to 14 days from the first day they bloom until they peak. However, some species of cherry blossoms can last longer, particularly the Yaezakura trees which are double-layered and have five petals. Once the cherry trees peak, they will start to fall one by one. But even before they bloom, flowering cherry trees are still an attraction of their own.

Is Japan more expensive during the cherry blossom season?
Yes! Prices in Japan tend to increase during the spring season due to the high demand. Whether it’s hotel accommodations or flights, expect prices around the cherry blossom season to be high. Nevertheless, this is not unique to cherry blossom season as other holiday seasons such as around the New Year and Golden Week (April 29 to May 5) also tend to be pricier.
