Kyoto is one of the best places to visit for a romantic getaway. From the Fushimi Inari Shrine, where you can walk around in a kimono, to visiting Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto is a haven for couples. Let’s take a journey to the best things to do for couples in Kyoto, Japan!
1. Take Snapshots Together with Fushimi Inari Taisha

Who says the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine is only a backdrop for frustrated models who want to show off on Instagram? When you’re in Kyoto as a couple, head over to this breathtaking Shinto shrine that dates back to the 700s.
Its mesmerizing path is lined with approximately tens of thousands of vibrant vermilion torii gates that are just so magical.
2. Visit Kiyomizu-dera

Illustriously perched on top of Mount Otowa, Kiyomizu-dera is a Buddhist temple where you can treat yourselves to breathtaking views of the surroundings from its vast veranda. Couple guests can enjoy the panorama, seeing notable landmarks, such as the Chion-In and Toji temples.
For an even more spectacular view, head over to the observation deck at the nearby Kyoto Tower. The perspective is literally bird’s-eye view. Grab your free binoculars and have fun.

3. Stroll Along Traditional Restaurants and Shops at Sanneizaka Slope

This slope may not be as neat as before, since there is already electrical wiring all over the place today, but still it’s fresh with history.
Sanneizaka Slope is said to be named after a legend that says the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi climbed uphill to visit the Kiyomizu-dera Temple to pray and ask for a child.
The slope also connects sightseeing spots, such as the Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine, and the temple, of course. Just be prepared for the crowd, lots of crowds.
Here, you can stroll around to see traditional restaurants and souvenir shops. The most romantic time to visit is at night when the streets are lit with dim streetlights. Charming and picturesque.
4. See and Smell Flowers at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens
No budget for bouquets for your woman? There are unlimited flowers for your sight and smell at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens.
Established in 1917 and open to the general public since the 1920s, the gardens are a vast expanse of around 60 acres in north Kyoto. Here, you can find over 12,000 tree species, as well as species of flowers and plants not just from around Japan, but also from across the globe.
The place is divided into various sections, such as the sunken, rose, and bamboo gardens. Plus, there’s also a conservatory showcasing tropical plants.

So, invest your money in luxurious hotels around town. There’s Aman Kyoto for a touch of tradition, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto for a futuristic appeal, Park Hyatt Kyoto for world-class accommodation, and The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto for some “Crazy Rich Asians” vibe.
6. Drop by the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Even if you’ve already visited the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest countless of times in your life as a solo traveler or with groups of friends, nothing beats the experience here when you’re with your significant other.
The air around becomes even cooler as you walk together holding hands or hugging each other. The bamboo grove with its pathway winding through towering bamboo stalks will always feel new. Enchanting, beautiful, and tranquil.
